         <abstract abstract-type="author">
            <p id="spar0005">A new genus and species of chinchilloid rodent is described here. It was found in Colhuehuapian levels (early Miocene) of the localities of Bryn Gwyn and Gran Barranca, Chubut Province, Argentina. The new taxon shows a unique combination of characters (e.g., protohypsodont teeth, upper molars trilophodont, m1 and m2 tri- or tetralophodont with the second crest in position of variable development, and m3 trilophodont, cement absent) that make it different from any other known chinchilloids. We performed a phylogenetic analysis to corroborate the relationships of the new taxon within the Chinchilloidea. Our results indicate that the new taxon is best classified as Chinchilloidea <italic>incertae sedis</italic>, together with <italic>Incamys</italic>, <italic>Garridomys</italic>, and <italic>Scotamys</italic>. These species form the basal stock that leads to the modern lineage Chinchillidae (chinchillas and viscachas). The presence of the new taxon in these localities increases the diversity of chinchilloids during the early Miocene and reduces the dissimilarity between the faunas found in Bryn Gwyn and Gran Barranca.</p>

            <p id="spar0010">Un nouveau genre et une nouvelle espèce de rongeur chinchilloïde sont ici décrits. Celui-ci a été trouvé dans les niveaux colhuéhuapiens (Miocène inférieur des localités de Bryn Gwyn et de Gran Baranca, province de Chubut, Argentine). Le nouveau taxon montre une combinaison unique de caractères (à savoir, dents protohypsodontes, molaires supérieures trilophodontes, m1 et m2 tri- ou tétralophodontes avec la seconde crête en position de développement variable et m3 trilophodonte, ciment absent) qui le rend différent de tous les autres chinchilloïdes connus. Une analyse phylogénétique a été réalisée pour confirmer les relations du nouveau taxon au sein des Chinchilloidea. Nos résultats montrent que le nouveau taxon se classe au mieux en tant que Chinchilloida <italic>incertae sedis</italic>, avec <italic>Incamys</italic>, <italic>Garridomys</italic> et <italic>Scotamys</italic>. Ces espèces forment le stock basal qui conduit à la lignée moderne des Chinchillidae (chinchillas et viscachas). La présence du nouveau taxon dans ces localités augmente la diversité des chinchilloïdes pendant le Miocène inférieur et réduit la différence entre les faunes trouvées à Bryn Gwyn et à Gran Barranca.</p>

         <title id="sect0025">Introduction</title>
         <p id="par0005">Chinchilloidea is a very distinguished group within the South American hystricognath rodents (Caviomorpha) and is currently represented by pacaranas, chinchillas, and vizcachas, comprising four genera (<italic>Dinomys</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0270" ref-type="bibr">Peters, 1873</xref>; <italic>Chinchilla</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0025" ref-type="bibr">Bennet, 1829</xref>; <italic>Lagidium</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0235" ref-type="bibr">Meyen, 1833</xref>; and <italic>Lagostomus</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Brookes, 1828</xref>) and eight species (<xref rid="bib0305" ref-type="bibr">Spotorno and Patton, 2015</xref>). However, the fossil record shows a large number of extinct forms known from the Oligocene onwards, and its acme is inferred during the late Miocene with at least twenty genera, indicating that chinchilloids were much more diverse in the past (<xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref>). The monophyly of Chinchilloidea has been corroborated in phylogenetic analyses based on molecular (e.g., <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Blanga-Kanfi et al., 2009</xref>, <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Fabre et al., 2012</xref>, <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Fabre et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0130" ref-type="bibr">Huchon and Douzery, 2001</xref> and <xref rid="bib0320" ref-type="bibr">Upham and Patterson, 2015</xref>) and morphological data (e.g., <xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Arnal and Vucetich, 2015</xref>, <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Kerber and Sánchez-Villagra, 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2017a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2017b</xref>, <xref rid="bib0155" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018a</xref> and <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018b</xref>).</p>
         <p id="par0010">Chinchilloidea are undoubtedly known since the early Oligocene (Tinguirirican–pre Deseadan faunas) in Chile (<xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Bertrand et al., 2012</xref> and <xref rid="bib0100" ref-type="bibr">Flynn et al., 2003</xref>) and Argentina (<xref rid="bib0335" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010a</xref>), and since then their fossil record is relatively continuous and broadly distributed in the continent. During the Deseadan, South American Land Mammals Age (SALMA) they were already moderately diverse, with representatives from Patagonia and Bolivia (<xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Busker and Dozo, 2017</xref>, <xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Hoffstetter and Lavocat, 1970</xref>, <xref rid="bib0220" ref-type="bibr">Loomis, 1914</xref>, <xref rid="bib0250" ref-type="bibr">Patterson and Wood, 1982</xref>, <xref rid="bib0265" ref-type="bibr">Pérez et al., 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0330" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich, 1989</xref> and <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015b</xref>). The dental morphology of the extant Chinchilloidea is characterized by high-crowned teeth without root formation (euhypsodont condition) and laminated cheek-teeth, whereas the fossil forms show a larger dental morphological diversity (<xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2015</xref>, <xref rid="bib0275" ref-type="bibr">Rasia, 2016</xref>, <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018b</xref> and <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref>). The presence of hypsodonty in <italic>Eoviscaccia frasinetti</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Bertrand et al., 2012</xref> during the early Oligocene indicates that the superfamily acquired this condition earlier that the other caviomorphs in their evolutionary history (<xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Bertrand et al., 2012</xref>, <xref rid="bib0330" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich, 1989</xref> and <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref>). Several genera retain a more generalized dental morphology until the Colhuehuapian SALMA (early Miocene; <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Flynn and Swisher, 1995</xref>) (<xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref> and <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref>). The chinchilloid diversity during the Colhuehuapian is relatively poor and only <italic>Perimys</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Ameghino, 1887</xref>, <italic>Garridomys</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref> and <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic>
            <italic>australis</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0330" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich, 1989</xref> are known (<xref rid="bib0180" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz, 2001a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0190" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz, 2002</xref>, <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0275" ref-type="bibr">Rasia, 2016</xref>, <xref rid="bib0330" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich, 1989</xref>, <xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref> and <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref>). After the Colhuehuapian SALMA, the specific diversity increased and the late Miocene is the acme of chinchilloids represented by a great taxonomical diversity (e.g., eumegamyines) and some very large size representatives (e.g., <italic>Phoberomys</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Kraglievich, 1926</xref>; <italic>Josephoartigasia</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0245" ref-type="bibr">Mones, 2007</xref>; <italic>Neoepiblema</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Ameghino, 1889</xref>) (<xref rid="bib0125" ref-type="bibr">Horovitz et al., 2006</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2017a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2017b</xref>, <xref rid="bib0155" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018b</xref>, <xref rid="bib0290" ref-type="bibr">Rinderknecht and Blanco, 2008</xref> and <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref>).</p>
         <p id="par0015">The best known Colhuehuapian SALMA localities in Patagonia, Gran Barranca and Bryn Gwyn (Chubut Province, Argentina) have the highest record and diversity of caviomorph rodents (<xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref>). Bryn Gwyn is 8 km apart from the locality of Gaiman (eastern Chubut Province), in the Lower Valley of the Chubut River (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>; <xref rid="bib0300" ref-type="bibr">Simpson, 1940</xref>), whilst Gran Barranca is placed near Lake Colhue Huapi (southeastern Chubut Province, <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Madden et al., 2010</xref>) (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>). These localities have been prospected for more than one century, but only two taxa of chinchilloids were described, <italic>Eoviscaccia australis</italic> and <italic>Perimys</italic> (several species) (<xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref>). In this contribution, we describe a new genus and species of chinchilloid rodent from the early Miocene of the localities of Bryn Gwyn and Gran Barranca. A cladistic analysis was performed in order to test the phylogenetic relationships of the new species within Chinchilloidea.</p>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0010">
         <label>2</label>
         <title id="sect0030">Materials and methods</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0020">The new genus and species is represented by several isolated teeth and five well-preserved mandibular fragments. These materials were collected during several field trips in 1990 and 1992 by members of the Laboratory of Paleontology of the Centro Nacional Patagónico (CENPAT, Puerto Madryn, Chubut) and the Museo de La Plata (MLP, La Plata, Buenos Aires), and during trips from 2007 to 2018 by members of the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF, Trelew, Chubut). The specimens are housed at the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio.</p>

            <title id="sect0055">Phylogenetic analysis</title>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0050">In order to test the phylogenetic position of the new species and the relationships within Chinchilloidea, a cladistic analysis was performed based on the data matrix of <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela (2018a)</xref>. This matrix is a modification of previous versions (e.g., <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>). We have modified it by including three more taxa (<italic>Incamys bolivianus</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Hoffstetter and Lavocat, 1970</xref>; <italic>Scotamys antiquus</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0220" ref-type="bibr">Loomis, 1914</xref>; and <italic>Saremmys ligcura</italic>), modifying four characters (2, 21, 42, and 43) and adding five new characters (46–50) (<xref rid="sec0090" ref-type="sec">Appendix A</xref>). We used Mesquite 3.11 (<xref rid="bib0225" ref-type="bibr">Maddison and Maddison, 2011</xref>) for editing the data matrix. The new dataset resulted in 20 taxa and 50 morphological characters, of which seven characters were considered ordered (<xref rid="sec0090" ref-type="sec">Appendix B</xref>). Heuristic parsimony analysis was performed in TNT version 1.5 (<xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Goloboff et al., 2008</xref> and <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Goloboff and Catalano, 2016</xref>), using 1000 replications of Wagner trees using random addition sequences followed by a Tree Bisection Reconnection (TBR) branch swapping algorithm (holding ten trees per replicate). The best trees obtained at the end of the replicates were subjected to a final round of TBR branch swapping. Equally weighted parsimony was used to minimize the number of postulated evolutionary transformations. The most parsimonious trees (MPTs) were summarized in a strict consensus, and support was calculated with absolute Bremer support (<xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Bremer, 1994</xref> and <xref rid="bib0105" ref-type="bibr">Goloboff and Farris, 2001</xref>).</p>

                  <bold>Geographic and stratigraphic occurrence</bold>. The holotype and all but one of the referred specimens come from a deposit of friable tuff above the nodular calcrete located in the base of the Trelew Member in La Cantera (see <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Bown and Fleagle, 1993</xref>, <xref rid="bib0135" ref-type="bibr">Kay et al., 2008</xref> and <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz, 1998</xref>) and El Camino (S 43°21′41.10″ W 65°27′56.1″) sites of the Sarmiento Formation, Bryn Gwyn, southern margin of the Lower Valley of the Chubut River, Chubut Province (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>). Only MPEF-PV 5421 comes from Gran Barranca locality, Chubut Province (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>), Colhuehuapian SALMA (early Miocene, <xref rid="bib0135" ref-type="bibr">Kay et al., 2008</xref>, <xref rid="bib0295" ref-type="bibr">Scasso and Bellosi, 2004</xref> and <xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref>).</p>
            </sec>
            <sec id="sec0050">
               <label>3.1.1</label>
               <title id="sect0070">Description</title>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0135">
                     <bold>Mandible</bold>. The mandible (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>) is slightly smaller and more slender than that of <italic>Scleromys</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Ameghino, 1887</xref> and <italic>Garridomys</italic> (<xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>). The diastema is similar to the condition of <italic>Scleromys</italic> and slightly more concave and shorter than in <italic>Perimys</italic>, <italic>Prolagostomus</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Ameghino, 1887</xref> and the extant forms (e.g., <italic>Lagidium, Lagostomus</italic>). The mental foramen is present as in the other chinchilloids and is dorsolabially located as in <italic>Incamys</italic> (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A), but unlike <italic>Garridomys</italic> and <italic>Scleromys</italic>, in which the foramen is more laterally located.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0140">In labial view (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A–C), the posteroventral projection of the posterior end of the mandibular symphysis (chin) is prominent, similar to the condition of <italic>Scleromys</italic>. It is located at the anterior level of the premolar (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A) as in the extant genera and differs from <italic>Incamys</italic> and <italic>Scleromys</italic>, in which the chin is at level of p4, and from <italic>Garridomys</italic>, in which it is posterior to the p4. The notch for the insertion of the muscle masseter medialis pars infraorbitalis (<italic>mmpi</italic>) is placed at the level of the m1 (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A and J), differing from <italic>Garridomys</italic> and <italic>Incamys</italic>, in which the <italic>mmpi</italic> is anterior to the m1. The <italic>mmpi</italic> is slightly developed as in other chinchillids and joined to the masseteric crest. The lateral crest is straight, the horizontal crest is reduced, and the dorsal portion of the masseteric fossa (i.e. fossa for the masseter medialis pars posterior muscle, <italic>sensu</italic> Rasia and Candela [2018a–c.39]) is extended posterior to the m3 up to the anterior portion of the condyle (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A and G). The masseteric crest is developed as in <italic>Scleromys</italic>, <italic>Incamys</italic>, and <italic>Garridomys</italic>, but contrasts with the condition of the extant forms<italic>.</italic> The coronoid process arises at the posterior level of the m3, but is dorsally broken in all the specimens (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A, D and G). The condyle is rounded, antero-posteriorly short and slightly above the level of the tooth row (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A), contrasting with the condition of the extant chinchillids, in which the condyle is much higher than the tooth row.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0145">On the lingual side, the hystricognathus groove is deep, the retromolar fossa is shallow, and the mandibular foramen is placed behind it and below the level of the molars (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Figs. 3</xref>B, H and K). Such a condition differs from the extant forms, in which the mandibular foramen is within the retromolar fossa.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0150">
                     <italic>Teeth.</italic> The teeth of <italic>Saremmys</italic> are larger than those of <italic>Garridomys</italic>, but smaller than those of <italic>Scleromys</italic> (<xref rid="tbl0005" ref-type="table">Table 1</xref> and <xref rid="tbl0010" ref-type="table">Table 2</xref>). The molariforms are protohypsodont (sensu <xref rid="bib0240" ref-type="bibr">Mones, 1982</xref>) (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref>), similar to those of <italic>Garridomys</italic>, <italic>Incamys</italic>, and <italic>Scleromys</italic>, but different from <italic>Australoprocta</italic>, <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz, 1998</xref>; in which the teeth are mesodont. Cement is absent as in <italic>Incamys</italic> and <italic>Australoprocta</italic>. The enamel is complete and uniformly distributed (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>) as in <italic>Australoprocta</italic>, while in <italic>Garridomys</italic> and <italic>Incamys menniorum</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015b</xref> the enamel is not uniform (<xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0250" ref-type="bibr">Patterson and Wood, 1982</xref> and <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015b</xref>).</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0155">
                     <italic>Incisors</italic>. The lower incisor is well preserved in the holotype (MPEF-PV 11340). It is robust as in <italic>Scleromys</italic>, with the anterior wall plane and not laterally compressed (<italic>sensu</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Arnal and Vucetich, 2015</xref>). It is extended to the m3, differing from <italic>Garridomys</italic> and <italic>Incamys</italic>, in which the incisor is longer, extending beneath m3.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0160">
                     <italic>dp4</italic>. The dp4 has two roots (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref>H) and is antero-posteriorly elongated and pentalophodont (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>A). The protoconid is aligned with the hypoconid. The metalophulid I is short and slightly curved, lingually joined to a conspicuous metaconid (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>A). Posteriorly to the metaconid is a cusp with a labial projection that we interpret as mesostylid with a short crest (neomesolophid? <italic>sensu</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Boivin et al., 2017</xref>). The mesolophid is straight, short and is in contact with a long ectolophid. The hypolophid is straight and wider than the other lophids. The posterolophid is long and strongly oblique, and separated by the metaflexid plus hypoflexid from the hypolophid. Antero-lingually to the posterolophid is a small cusp that could be an intraspecific variation.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0165">With little more wear (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>B), the occlusal morphology is simplified and forms a large anterofossettid, which in some specimens is divided into two smaller ones (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>C). The mesoflexid is oblique and still open. The hypoflexid is also strongly oblique and fused to the metaflexid. In MPEF-PV 11348C (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>D), there is a small labial flexid, anterior to the hypoflexid. We interpret this flexid as an individual variation. When the dp4 is worn (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>D and E), the lingual wall becomes straight, whilst the anterior and posterior ones become rounded. The fossettids are small and shallow, and the hypoflexid is still open.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0170">
                     <italic>p4</italic>. The trigonid is labio-lingually narrower than the talonid (<xref rid="fig0035" ref-type="fig">Fig. 7</xref>), as in <italic>Incamys</italic>, <italic>Australoprocta</italic>, and <italic>Garridomys</italic>. In unworn specimens (<xref rid="fig0035" ref-type="fig">Fig. 7</xref>A–C), the cusps are developed and quite bulky. The protoconid is labiolingually aligned with the metaconid, which is conspicuous. Posteriorly to the metaconid is a noticeable mesostylid, as in the juvenile specimens of <italic>Scleromys</italic> and <italic>Garridomys</italic>. The metalophulid I is not visible in juvenile stages, because of a deep anterior notch between the proto- and metaconid, different than in <italic>Incamys</italic>. In <italic>Saremmys</italic>, with wear, the notch is lost and the metalophulid I reaches the occlusal surface. This sequence is also seen in <italic>Garridomys</italic> and <italic>Scleromys</italic>. The second crest in position emerges from the protoconid and it has a variable development. In some specimens, this crest is short and curved (<xref rid="fig0035" ref-type="fig">Fig. 7</xref>A), and in others it is long and joined to the mesostylid (<xref rid="fig0035" ref-type="fig">Fig. 7</xref>B). The hypolophid is almost straight and labially oriented, and is isolated from the other crests. The posterolophid extends from the hypoconid and is oblique. The mesoflexid is labiolingually open and the hypoflexid is joined to the metaflexid (taeniodont pattern).</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0175">With more wear (<xref rid="fig0035" ref-type="fig">Fig. 7</xref>D–F), the metalophulid I is well developed. When the second crest in position is short, the antero- and mesofosettid are fused and form a unique fossettid; when it is long, the antero- and mesofossetid are isolated (<xref rid="fig0035" ref-type="fig">Fig. 7</xref>C and E). The hypolophid is joined to a short ectolophid. The posterolophid is antero-posteriorly enlarged, acquiring a laminar shape. The hypoflexid plus metaflexid is lingually closed, forming a long flexid that remains open. The p4 forms two well-developed roots, anteroposteriorly aligned (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref>G and H).</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0180">
                     <italic>Lower molars</italic>. The occlusal pattern of the lower molars is tri- or tetralophodont, with the second crest in position variably developed (<xref rid="fig0040" ref-type="fig">Fig. 8</xref>) similar to the condition of <italic>Scleromys</italic>. The general wear pattern of the occlusal surface is similar to that of p4. The specimen MPEF-PV 11347b (<xref rid="fig0040" ref-type="fig">Fig. 8</xref>A) is relatively juvenile and the metalophulid I is long and straight. The second crest in position is partially developed towards the labial side. The mesoflexid and the meta- plus hypoflexid are still open. The hypolophid is long and oblique. The posterolophid is long, wide and curved, and it is isolated from the other crests. The m3 is always trilophodont and has a shorter posterolophid than m1 and m2 (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>). With more wear, the lingual flexids become closed, the anterior and lingual walls of the molars are straight, and the posterior wall is curved (<xref rid="fig0040" ref-type="fig">Fig. 8</xref>B–D). The trigonid acquires a triangular outline, while the talonid (only formed by the posterolophid) is laminar (<xref rid="fig0040" ref-type="fig">Fig. 8</xref>E). In more advanced stages of wear, the contour of the teeth become more rounded with the curved anterior and posterior walls (<xref rid="fig0040" ref-type="fig">Fig. 8</xref>F). The meta- and hypoflexid are divided, and only two small fossettids remain (antero- and metafossettid). The hypoflexid is labiolingually shorter and forms a small hypofosettid in very late ontogenetic stages (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>D).</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0185">
                     <italic>Upper molars</italic>. The occlusal pattern is trilophodont, (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>), contrasting with the condition of <italic>Incamys</italic> and <italic>Garridomys</italic> (<xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>). The hypocone is more labial than the protocone and the anteroloph is long, curved and laminar-shaped (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>A). It is separated from the protoloph by the hypoflexus plus paraflexus during the first stages of wear (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>A). The hypoflexus is funnel-like, wider in its lingual portion, as already stated by <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al. (2013)</xref>. The antero-labial corner of the anteroloph is enlarged. The protoloph is long, curved and reaches the hypocone postero-lingually (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>A and B). The posteroloph is shorter than the other crests and is posteriorly convex (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>A and B). The metaflexid is oblique, long and wide, and becomes closed first (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>C and D). In more advanced stages of wear, the parafossette is formed and the hypoflexid is shorter (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>C). The anterior lobe (only formed by anteroloph) acquires a rectangular shape and the posterior one is triangular in outline (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>C). The M3 (<xref rid="fig0045" ref-type="fig">Fig. 9</xref>D) has a more triangular posterior lobe, clearly narrower than the M1–M2, and a more curved protoloph. Also, the M3 is smaller than the other molars.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0190">The specimen MPEF-PV 5421 from Gran Barranca was briefly described by <xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al. (2010b)</xref> and assigned to Chinchilloidea indet. Then, <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al. (2013)</xref> also briefly described the molar. Despite being similar to <italic>Garridomys</italic>, the authors point out several differences with the materials assigned to this species and also assigned it as a Chinchilloidea indet. Here, we assign MPEF-PV 5421 to <italic>S. ligcura</italic> because the tooth is trilophodont, with homogeneous enamel band, without cement, protohypsodont and hypoflexus join paraflexus.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0195">
                     <bold>Remarks</bold>. <italic>Australoprocta</italic> (<xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz, 1998</xref>) was found in Bryn Gwyn (Trelew Member, early Miocene) and assigned to Dasyproctidae (Cavioidea). Despite some similarities, it differs from <italic>Saremmys</italic> in several striking characters, such us a lower crown tooth and tetralophodont upper molars (see above). However, the phylogenetic position of <italic>Australoprocta</italic> has never been tested. The revision of <italic>Australoprocta</italic> and its phylogenetic relationships is being performed by one of the authors (MEP).</p>
               </sec>
            </sec>
         </sec>
         <sec id="sec0055">
            <label>3.2</label>
            <title id="sect0075">Phylogenetic analysis</title>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0200">The parsimony cladistic analysis of the morphological matrix resulted in eight MPTs of 128 steps. The strict consensus of all MPTs is shown in <xref rid="fig0050" ref-type="fig">Fig. 10</xref>. The consensus coincides with the results of <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela (2018a)</xref> in retrieving the monophyly of Dinomyidae, Chinchillidae and Neoepiblemidae (see unambiguous synapomorphies in <xref rid="sec0090" ref-type="sec">Appendix C</xref>).</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0205">The phylogenetic analysis places <italic>Saremmys ligcura</italic> (<xref rid="fig0050" ref-type="fig">Fig. 10</xref>, Node C) among the most basal forms of Chinchillidae + Neoepiblemyidae (<xref rid="fig0050" ref-type="fig">Fig. 10</xref>, Node E). The new taxon clusters with <italic>Scotamys</italic>, and the clade of <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> and more derived taxa (<xref rid="fig0050" ref-type="fig">Fig. 10</xref>, Node D) sharing only one unambiguous synapomorphy: position of the anterior border of mmpi below m1 (ch. 46[0]). This politomy results from a lack of phylogenetic information (zero length branch) in the node that contains <italic>Saremmys</italic> + (<italic>Eoviscaccia </italic>+ (Chinchillidae + Neoepiblemidae)), so in the consensus the node collapses. However, <italic>Saremmys</italic> differs from <italic>Scotamys</italic> in the absence of cement, a shorter root of the lower incisor, a more concave diastema and the distribution of the enamel, among the clear morphological differences of the tooth of both genera described above. <italic>Saremmys</italic> differs from <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> + more derived taxa in the very thick width of the flexus/ids (ch. 7[1]), and the presence of two transverse crests on M1–M2 in adult stages (ch. 4[3]). Also, <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> and the more derived taxa are more hypsodont, and with a clear tendency toward laminated teeth.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0210">In the present contribution, we have included <italic>Incamys</italic>
                  <italic>bolivianus</italic>, and <italic>Scotamys</italic>
                  <italic>antiquus</italic> in the phylogenetic analysis. So far, <italic>Scotamys</italic> was never included in a phylogenetic analysis and <italic>Incamys</italic> was only included in the analysis of <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela (2018b)</xref>.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0215">
                  <italic>Incamys</italic>
                  <italic>bolivianus</italic> was considered a dasyproctid by several authors (<xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">Lavocat, 1976</xref> and <xref rid="bib0250" ref-type="bibr">Patterson and Wood, 1982</xref>), although it was reassigned to Chinchilloidea by <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref> and <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015b</xref>. In this contribution, <italic>Incamys</italic> is recovered within Chinchilloidea, supporting <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref> and <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015b</xref> and <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela (2018b)</xref>, and it is the most basal genus in the node towards Chinchillidae + Neoepiblemidae. In <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela (2018b)</xref>, <italic>Incamys</italic> is recovered as the most basal taxa in the node leading only to Chinchillidae. The basal position of <italic>Incamys</italic> (<xref rid="fig0050" ref-type="fig">Fig. 10</xref>, Node A) is supported by the following unambiguous synapomorphies: the hypoflexus (in adults) extends more than half way across crowns (ch. 3[1]), the dorsal root of the zygoma is at the same level of M1–M2 (ch. 21[1]), a sagittal crest is present (ch. 27[0]).</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0220">
                  <italic>Scotamys</italic> is recovered within Chinchilloidea as proposed by <xref rid="bib0220" ref-type="bibr">Loomis (1914)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0360" ref-type="bibr">Wood and Patterson (1959)</xref>, unlike <xref rid="bib0325" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich, 1985</xref> and <xref rid="bib0330" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich, 1989</xref>, who considered this genus a “cephalomyid”, and the proposal of <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz (2001b)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Bertrand et al. (2012)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al. (2015a)</xref>, who proposed the genus as a neoepiblemyid. The analysis of <xref rid="bib0080" ref-type="bibr">Busker and Dozo (2018)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela (2018b)</xref> included “cephalomyids,” but did not include <italic>Scotamys</italic>, so future contributions should further test the position of this genus within the “cephalomyids”.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0225">On the other hand, the position of <italic>Garridomys</italic> is supported by the following unambiguous synapomorphies: presence of cement (ch. 5[1]), posterior extension of the lower incisor below m3 (ch. 11[1]), and the fact that the anteroloph in M1–M3 reaches the paracone (ch. 48[1]).</p>

         <title id="sect0080">Discussion</title>
         <sec id="sec0065">
            <label>4.1.1</label>
            <title id="sect0085">Taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of <italic>Saremmys ligcura</italic>
            </title>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0230">According to our phylogenetic results, <italic>Saremmys</italic> is deeply nested within Chinchilloidea as a Chinchilloidea <italic>incertae</italic>
                  <italic>sedis</italic> (sensu <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2016</xref>, <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018b</xref>, <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref> and <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015b</xref>), together with <italic>Incamys</italic>, <italic>Scotamys</italic>, and <italic>Garridomys</italic>. Although <italic>Saremmys</italic> forms a politomy with <italic>Scotamys</italic> and the more derived clade of chinchilloids, the combination of characters described above clearly justify the creation of a new genus and species (see § <italic>Phylogenetic analysis</italic>).</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0235">In recent publications (<xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Kerber and Sánchez-Villagra, 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2017a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0155" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018a</xref> and <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018b</xref>), <italic>Garridomys</italic> is placed as the sister group of a clade formed by <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> and more derived chinchilloids. This result led the authors to interpret <italic>Garridomys</italic> as the earliest diverging chinchilloid within the clade that includes modern chinchillids (<xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref>). However, with the inclusion of <italic>Incamys</italic>, <italic>Saremmys</italic> and <italic>Scotamys</italic>, the evolutionary history is a little different. Our results indicate that <italic>Incamys</italic> is the most basal form of the lineage that leads to the origin of the modern vizcachas and chinchillas, whereas <italic>Scotamys</italic> and <italic>Saremmys</italic> are more closely related to <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> and more derived forms. In this context, the position of <italic>Garridomys</italic> takes an intermediate place within this basal stock.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0240">
                  <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> is recovered as sister taxa of Chinchillidae + Neoepiblemidae, similar to other recent analyses (<xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Kerber and Sánchez-Villagra, 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2017a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0155" ref-type="bibr">Kerber et al., 2018</xref> and <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018a</xref>). In <xref rid="bib0275" ref-type="bibr">Rasia (2016)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela (2018b)</xref>, <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> is recovered as a basal lineage within Chinchillidae. These proposals are different from the others authors, who considered the genus a Lagostominae (e.g., <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Bond et al., 1998</xref>, <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz, 2001b</xref>, <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz, 2005</xref>, <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref> and <xref rid="bib0330" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich, 1989</xref>).</p>
            </sec>
         </sec>
         <sec id="sec0070">
            <label>4.1.2</label>
            <title id="sect0090">The diversity of Chinchilloidea in the Colhuehuapian SALMA</title>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0245">The record of new species <italic>Saremmys ligcura</italic> increases the knowledge of colhuehuapian chinchilloids, so far scarce and unique from Patagonia (Argentina) (<xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref> and <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Rasia and Candela, 2018b</xref>
                  <xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref> and <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2015a</xref>). The main localities with colhuehuapian chinchilloids are Gran Barranca, Bryn Gwyn, and Cerro Bandera, with a low diversity (only four genera known including <italic>Saremmys</italic>). It is interesting that more derived forms (<italic>Eoviscaccia,</italic>
                  <italic>Perimys</italic>) coexisted with more basal forms (<italic>Saremmys</italic>, <italic>Garridomys</italic>) during the Colhuehuapian SALMA in these localities. It is also remarkable that <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic>, <italic>Perimys,</italic> and <italic>Saremmys</italic> are shared between Gran Barranca and Bryn Gwyn, while <italic>Garridomys</italic> so far is unique from Cerro Bandera (Neuquén). This discovery makes Bryn Gwyn and Gran Barranca the localities with the highest and more diverse record of colhuehuapian chinchilloids. It should be noted that the age of Cerro Bandera is still dubious (<xref rid="bib0075" ref-type="bibr">Busker et al., 2017</xref>, <xref rid="bib0200" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2011</xref>, <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2013</xref> and <xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Kramarz et al., 2015</xref>), so the faunistic differences with Bryn Gwyn and the colhuehuapian levels of Gran Barranca could be due to chronological differences.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0250">As stated above, <italic>Saremmys</italic> is one of the few taxa shared between Gran Barranca and Bryn Gwyn (<xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref>), although, so far, it is clearly more abundant in Bryn Gwyn. Another genus very abundant in Bryn Gwyn and only represented by an isolated molar in Gran Barranca is <italic>Soriamys</italic> (<xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref>). The efforts of prospection carried out over the years in both localities suggest that the difference in the abundance of taxa is not a bias of fieldwork. Also, the only specimen of <italic>Saremmys</italic> known from Gran Barranca is slightly smaller, which could be attributed to ecological differences between both localities (<italic>e.g.</italic>, <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Arnal et al., 2017</xref> and <xref rid="bib0310" ref-type="bibr">Taraborelli et al., 2007</xref>). There are two main hypotheses that explain these size differences; one hypothesis proposes a chronological difference between Bryn Gwyn (Trelew Member) and Gran Barranca (<xref rid="bib0300" ref-type="bibr">Simpson, 1940</xref>). The other hypothesis proposes different environments for the two localities (<xref rid="bib0255" ref-type="bibr">Pérez, 2010</xref>, <xref rid="bib0260" ref-type="bibr">Pérez et al., 2010</xref> and <xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Vucetich et al., 2010b</xref>). Despite the species is present in both localities, the clear difference in abundance of <italic>S. ligcura</italic> would support the ecological differences proposed for the localities. Nevertheless, to corroborate this hypothesis, a comparative integral study of the mammal assemblages of both communities would be necessary.</p>
            </sec>
         </sec>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0075">
         <label>5</label>
         <title id="sect0095">Conclusions</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0255">Here we present a new chinchilloid rodent, <italic>Saremmys ligcura</italic>, from the Chubut Province. <italic>Saremnys ligcura</italic> is the third genus of chinchilloids rodent from Bryn Gwyn and Gran Barranca and, like <italic>Eoviscaccia</italic> and <italic>Perimys</italic>, is shared by both localities. In general, the results of our phylogenetic analysis are consistent with those from previous studies and support the existence of several Chinchilloidea <italic>incertae</italic>
               <italic>sedis</italic>, including <italic>S. ligcura,</italic> and a supposed Tinguirirican SALMA (early Oligocene) for the origin of chinchilloids. Our results also support the inclusion of <italic>Incamys</italic> and <italic>Scotamys</italic> within Chinchilloidea <italic>incertae sedis</italic>, as proposed by previous authors. <italic>S. ligcura</italic> is part of the basal forms that led to the origin of the modern vizcachas and chinchillas. This finding increases our knowledge about the taxonomy and diversity of the Chinchilloidea <italic>incertae</italic>
               <italic>sedis</italic> during Colhuehuapian age, a key moment of the evolutionary history of the clade.</p>
